Oral Cancer Screening: A Lifesaving Five-Minute Exam
Over the years, public awareness campaigns have changed how we think about many types of cancer. Thanks to education and routine screenings, more people understand the importance of early detection for breast, colon, and skin cancer. These efforts have saved countless lives by finding problems before they become harder to treat. The same principle applies to oral cancer.
Although oral cancer doesn’t always receive the same attention, early detection can significantly impact treatment outcomes. That is why oral cancer screenings are an important part of the preventive care we provide at Eckdhal Family Dentistry. The exam takes only a few minutes, is painless, and could change your life.
Early Detection Matters
One of the biggest challenges with oral cancer is that it usually develops without causing pain or obvious symptoms. By the time a sore or lump becomes noticeable, the disease may already be more advanced. When oral cancer is identified early, treatment is often more successful and less extensive.
Unfortunately, many cases are not diagnosed until the cancer has spread beyond its original location, making treatment more complex. This is why routine dental appointments are so valuable. Besides checking your teeth and gums, your dentist evaluates the health of the soft tissues throughout your mouth and looks for changes you may not notice.
What Happens During an Oral Cancer Screening?
Many patients are surprised to learn they have already had an oral cancer screening during previous dental appointments. The exam is quick, comfortable, and part of a comprehensive dental checkup.
During the screening, we carefully examine the soft tissues of your mouth, including your lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, the roof and floor of your mouth, and the back of your throat. We also gently feel the jaw and neck for any unusual lumps, swelling, or tenderness.
Who Is at Risk?
While certain factors increase the risk of oral cancer, the disease can affect anyone. That is why screenings are recommended for all adult patients, not just those with known risk factors. Common risk factors associated with oral cancer include:
- tobacco use
- excessive alcohol consumption
- prolonged sun exposure to the lips
- infection with human papillomavirus (HPV)
However, many patients diagnosed with oral cancer don’t fit the traditional risk profile, making regular screenings even more important. Rather than trying to determine who is at risk, we believe every patient deserves reassurance from a thorough examination.
What Happens If We Find Something Unusual
Finding an unusual area during a screening does not automatically mean cancer is present. Many changes inside the mouth are caused by everyday irritation, such as accidentally biting your cheek, irritation from certain foods, or temporary ulcers that heal on their own.
If we notice an area needing closer attention, we will document it carefully and may recommend re-evaluating it after a short period to see if it resolves naturally. If it doesn’t heal as expected, we will refer you to a specialist for further evaluation. When necessary, a biopsy is the only way to determine exactly what the tissue change represents.
Prevention Starts With Routine Care
One of the greatest benefits of regular dental appointments is that they let us monitor changes over time. Something that seems insignificant today may look different months later. Having a consistent record of your oral health helps us identify concerns as early as possible. Just as regular physicals help monitor your overall health, routine dental examinations play an important role in protecting the health of your mouth and supporting your overall well-being.
A Few Seconds Can Make a Lasting Difference
Oral cancer screenings are one of the simplest yet most valuable parts of your preventive dental care. They require only a few seconds, cause no discomfort, and provide peace of mind while helping us detect concerns at the earliest possible stage. At Eckdhal Family Dentistry, we believe preventive care is about much more than protecting your teeth. It is about supporting your long-term health and helping you make informed decisions about your care.
If it has been more than six months since your last dental examination, we invite you to schedule an appointment at our office located in Monroe, WI. We look forward to helping you maintain a healthy smile and providing the preventive care you deserve.
