Did You Know That Your Saliva Is Always Working to Protect Your Smile?
Saliva probably doesn’t make your list of things you’re grateful for, but while you’re going about your day, it’s quietly working in the background to help protect your teeth, keep your mouth comfortable, and make everyday things like eating and speaking easier. Saliva is one of those parts of oral health that’s easy to overlook until something changes.
Your Mouth Has a Built-In Cleaning Crew
Every time you eat, tiny bits of food and bacteria are left behind in your mouth. Saliva helps wash some of that away. That is helpful because the bacteria in dental plaque feed on sugars and carbohydrates and produce acids that can attack tooth enamel. Saliva helps neutralize those acids, reducing how long your teeth are exposed to them. Saliva also carries minerals, including calcium and phosphate, that help your enamel recover from the small mineral losses that occur throughout the day.
Part of the Team
Saliva works alongside good brushing and flossing habits, regular professional care, a balanced diet, and all the other things you already do to help keep your mouth healthy. That combination matters because prevention is not usually about one big thing. It is the result of many small protective factors working together over time.
When Your Mouth Feels a Little Too Dry
Most of us experience a dry mouth occasionally. Maybe you’re nervous, haven’t had enough water, or have been talking for what feels like three straight hours, but persistent dry mouth is different. Medications are also a common cause of dry mouth.
When there is not enough saliva, you may notice that your mouth feels sticky or uncomfortable. Speaking and swallowing can become more difficult, your breath may change, and your risk of tooth decay can increase. This is why we want to know if your mouth has been feeling noticeably drier than it used to. So, make sure you tell us, even if it seems like a small change.
It’s Another Piece of the Bigger Picture
You already know that when we see you, we are interested in more than checking individual teeth. We want to understand the full picture of your oral health and how it fits into your overall health. That is why we ask about changes in medications, health conditions, daily habits, and other things that may not initially seem related to dentistry.
Sometimes something as ordinary as a change in saliva can give us useful information, and because we have the benefit of seeing you over time, we can also look for changes in your teeth, gums, and mouth that may suggest something is different.
Your Saliva Deserves a Little Credit
The next time you think about everything that helps keep your smile healthy, give saliva a little recognition. It washes, neutralizes, protects, and helps you eat and speak. For something we rarely think about, it stays pretty busy.
If you notice that your mouth has become unusually dry, do not assume it is something you simply have to live with. Mention it the next time we see you, or give us a call. We can talk about what you are experiencing and determine whether there are steps that may help.
If it’s time for your next appointment, schedule with us at our office located in Monroe, WI. We are always happy to see you, answer your questions, and work together to keep your smile healthy for the long run.
